Parasite

It has been two weeks since Garrett drove all the way to the middle of nowhere to pick Victor up and he hasn’t left yet. At least he doesn’t leave and stay gone. Gradually his things have started to migrate their way back into the house even though he’s sleeping in the guest room down the hall.

On his second day there Garrett gave Victor more money for drugs with a resigned, tight look to his face. He’d still rather pay for Victor’s junk than have him out on the street whoring himself and he’s not going to get clean until he wants to, that has never changed. Victor took the money, but he didn’t buy much dope with it—a few shrooms, some more Valium and a half ounce of weed. The rest he spent on a chicken and some vegetables that he managed to cook without disaster ensuing. He used to be a really good cook; it wasn’t something he’d ever loved to do, but he’d still been handy in the kitchen. It was one of those blessing/curse kind of deals, but when Garrett tasted the chicken with understandable trepidation then declared it delicious, Victor felt good for the first time in a while.

He doesn’t know what he and Garrett are doing. They’re not back together, but Garrett’s also settling back into the house and their life together is slotting back into place much the same as it always has. Except there’s no Garrett beside him when he lies down to sleep and no Garrett to kiss his forehead before he leaves for work. It still feels a lot like halfway—and half in a bad way, a way that makes Victor lonely even though Garrett is right there with him when he isn’t at work. He is curious to know if this is them working things out, but he’s too afraid to ask. He thinks if he asks then he might remind Garrett that he left and shouldn’t have come back because Victor is toxic to be around. He worries that if he asks Garrett will just shake his head and say no in his soft voice, the implication being more along the lines that he bought this house and therefore has every right to live in it. Thar and Victor can’t be trusted to go outside without a helmet on for fear he’ll do something even worse than the last time.

It’s on the day of their two week anniversary while Victor is pondering whether or not he’s too high to cook supper tonight while listening to the sound of Garrett’s car coming down the gravel drive that the pain hits him. It’s sharp and so sudden that Victor doesn’t have time to even cry out as he doubles up, the cramping in his belly like a giant paw kneading at his insides. It begins to fade away and Victor is already trying to straighten upright again when another pain twists his insides into more agonizing knots. He does cry out then, a choked off, strangled scream as his knees give way and he hits the floor.
